Empagliflozin API FAQs: Storage, Solubility, Shelf Life and CoA

Last updated: September 2026. For procurement and QA teams qualifying an empagliflozin source. Specification figures come from our published product page; anything not published is marked to confirm in writing.

Empagliflozin API is a crystalline SGLT2 inhibitor, CAS 864070-44-0, molecular weight 450.91 g/mol. Store it sealed, dry, and dark; no cold chain. It is sparingly soluble in methanol and soluble in acetonitrile-water (1:1). Our published limits cap total impurities at 1.0% and loss on drying at 0.5% w/w. Ask for the batch CoA, the impurity profile, and the certificate that names this product.

What Empagliflozin API Is

Empagliflozin API is a selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor. It blocks glucose reabsorption in the proximal tubule, so excess glucose leaves in the urine, the mechanism behind its use in oral antidiabetic formulations for type 2 diabetes.

More on the pharmacology sits in our note on Empagliflozin API uses.

1. How Should It Be Stored?

Sealed, dry, away from light. Airtight HDPE or inert glass, opaque or amber packaging, desiccated storage. No cold chain. Humidity is the risk people underestimate.

2. What Is the Solubility Profile?

Sparingly soluble in methanol, soluble in a 1:1 acetonitrile-water mixture. Aqueous solubility alone is poor, and that is what formulators design around: co-solvents, or particle engineering such as spray drying and micronisation. Agree about the particle size distribution at enquiry stage.

3. What Is Shelf Life?

Stability data sets it, not convention. Under ICH Q1A a retest or expiry period comes from real-time studies at the labelled storage condition, supported by accelerated data. Ask for the report covering the pack you will receive.

4. What Does the CoA Cover?

One batch, against the agreed specification. For an API of this kind the CoA typically covers identification by IR and HPLC, assay, related substances, residual solvents by GC against ICH Q3C limits, loss on drying, residue on ignition, elemental impurities, and particle size where the spec calls for it.

Our published specification caps total impurities at 1.0%, any unspecified impurity at 0.1%, loss on drying (105 °C, 3 hours) at 0.5% w/w, and residue on ignition at 0.1% w/w. Read the CoA against your specification, not the supplier’s, and check the methods are ones your QC lab can reproduce.

5. Is It Covered by Patents?

Patent position varies by territory and moves over time, so treat it market by market. Run a freedom-to-operate analysis for each destination and keep non-infringement documentation on file. The regulatory guidelines for Empagliflozin API exports cover the EU and US requirements.

6. Which Quality Standards Apply?

Industry frameworks do most of the work here, and they belong to no single company. ICH Q7 sets GMP for active pharmaceutical ingredients: process validation, change control, cleaning validation between campaigns. ICH Q3A and Q3C govern impurity and residual solvent limits. ALCOA+ covers data integrity. Pharmacopoeial monographs define methods where one exists.

Our Hyderabad site holds ISO 9001:2015 certification from DNV Business Assurance UK Limited under UKAS accreditation, certificate 156792-2014-AQ-IND-UKAS, first certified 20 August 2002, scoped to “Development, manufacture and sale of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), drug intermediates, biological products & liver injectable”. Manufacturing follows ICH Q7 principles. More sits on our quality management system page.

We also hold a WHO-GMP certificate from the Drugs Control Administration, Government of Telangana, L.Dis.No. 150458/TS/2024 dated 6 June 2024, valid to 5 June 2027 for select products.

7. How Is It Packed for Export?

Pack size is agreed per order. Standard practice for a solid API of this class is HDPE drums with double liners, nitrogen flushing where the material warrants it, and tamper-evident sealing. Labels carry product name, batch number, manufacturing and retest dates, and net quantity. The CoA and safety data sheet travel with the consignment, with a Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product arranged where the destination requires one. Agree on that document set before the purchase order, not at the port.

8. How Should Procurement Teams Source It?

  1. Shortlist manufacturers, not traders. Ask who holds the licence.
  2. Request the specification sheet and a representative CoA.
  3. Ask which certificates name this API, and read the annexures.
  4. Sample it and run your own identity, assay and impurity checks.
  5. Get Incoterms, lead time and MOQ in writing.
  6. Qualify the vendor: questionnaire first, audit if volume justifies it.
  7. Confirm regulatory support for your market, and who files what.

Step five is where negotiations go sideways; the Empagliflozin API pricing breakdown explains what moves the number.

Step six decides whether the relationship lasts. The guide on how to select the right Empagliflozin API supplier covers it.

Why Buyers Look to India

Hyderabad has a deep process-chemistry base and a cost structure for multi-step synthesis that is hard to match. That is a reason to start here, not a reason to skip qualification. We are Biochemical and Synthetic Products Private Limited, and we have manufactured APIs at Balanagar since 1943 under licence 118/HD/AP/96/B/R; the product data, published specification and quotation process for this molecule are on our page for Empagliflozin API manufacturers in India.

What matters more is what a supplier puts in writing: the specification, the CoA, the stability summary, and the certificate annexure naming the product.

FAQs

Can Empagliflozin API be bought online?

Not as a consumer purchase. It is a regulated bulk material sold business to business against documentation, licence checks and a purchase order.

Does it need refrigerated shipping?

Not under normal conditions. It is a stable crystalline solid; moisture, light and sealing matter more than temperature.

How does it differ from dapagliflozin as an API?

Both are SGLT2 inhibitors but differ in selectivity, structure and formulation behaviour, set out in Empagliflozin vs Dapagliflozin.

Which certificate proves an API was made under GMP?

None on its own, for a given product. A WHO-GMP certificate lists the products it covers; ISO 9001 covers the management system. Ask for the annexure and check the dates.
