Resmetirom Price in India: 80 mg Tablet Cost and What Will Bring It Down
Resmetirom Price in India: 80 mg Tablet Cost and What Will Bring It Down
Last updated: October 2026. Scope: why resmetirom has no MRP in India yet, what imported packs and the US list price cost, which strength patients take, and what will change the price once Indian generics are approved.
Resmetirom has no MRP in India because no company has permission to market it here yet. Patients import it on a personal-use permit, so the price depends on the source: imported originator packs cost several times more than Bangladeshi generics. In the US the 2026 list price is about $4,240 for 30 tablets of any strength. Indian generics, now in Phase III trials, are the likeliest route to a lower price.
Why Resmetirom Has No MRP in India Yet
A medicine gets a printed MRP in India only after the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) allows a company to manufacture or import it and sell it. For resmetirom, that has not happened. CDSCO’s Subject Expert Committee for gastroenterology and hepatology has recommended bioequivalence studies or Phase III trials for more than ten companies. In the committee records available up to September 2026, none of its decisions grants marketing permission.
So there is no Indian brand and no pharmacy shelf price. What exists is a set of import quotes. The approval history and the companies in the race are covered in is resmetirom available in India.
Resmetirom Price in the US
In the US, where resmetirom is sold as Rezdiffra, the 2026 list price (wholesale acquisition cost) is about $4,240 for a bottle of 30 tablets. That works out to roughly $50,900 a year. At launch in March 2024, the list price was $47,400 a year.
The price is the same for the 60 mg, 80 mg and 100 mg tablets.
80 mg, 100 mg or 60 mg: Does the Strength Change the Cost?
The dose depends on body weight and on other medicines, not on how advanced the disease is:
- 80 mg once daily for patients under 100 kg
- 100 mg once daily for patients at 100 kg or more
- 60 mg (under 100 kg) or 80 mg (100 kg or more) for patients who also take a moderate CYP2C8 inhibitor such as clopidogrel
Because the US list price is the same for every strength, a US patient on 100 mg pays the same per month as one on 80 mg. How resmetirom acts, and why these drug interactions matter, is explained in resmetirom mechanism of action. The dose is always the prescribing doctor’s decision.
What Sets the Price of Resmetirom
Not the chemistry. A 30-day pack of 80 mg tablets holds 2.4 g of resmetirom. Over the year to mid-2026, the active pharmaceutical ingredient traded at an average of roughly USD 1,200 to 1,300 per kg, so the drug substance in that pack is worth about USD 3.
The rest of a $4,240 list price reflects what surrounds the molecule: years of development, the MAESTRO-NASH trial with its liver biopsies, finished tablet manufacture and a period of market exclusivity. In the US, new chemical entity exclusivity runs to March 2029 and patents on the crystal form run to 2033.
In India, imported packs carry an extra layer of cost: international freight, import paperwork and intermediaries. A locally made generic would not carry any of it.
When Indian Generics Could Bring the Price Down
Several Indian companies are working on it. CDSCO’s expert committee has recommended Phase III trials for Sun Pharma, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Mankind Pharma and others, and more companies are at the bioequivalence stage. In May 2026, Torrent told investors it would launch only after the patent expires, which its managing director expected within the next year, and indicated a launch within 12 to 18 months.
No one can quote an Indian MRP before approval. Bangladesh shows the direction: with 17 generic brands on its market, resmetirom sells there at a small fraction of the US price.
Each company that launches will need a steady supply of the drug substance. Bio-Synth manufactures Resmetirom API at its Balanagar site in Hyderabad and synthesises all Resmetirom intermediates in-house.
The technical side of making the molecule, from the published synthesis to polymorph control, is covered in resmetirom API manufacturing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price of resmetirom 80 mg in India?
Resmetirom 80 mg has no approved MRP in India because it is not yet approved for sale. Imported originator packs (Rezdiffra) are quoted at roughly ₹70,000 to ₹1,00,000 for 28 to 30 tablets, and imported Bangladeshi generics at roughly ₹8,000 to ₹12,500.
How much does resmetirom cost in the US?
The 2026 US list price of Rezdiffra is about $4,240 for 30 tablets, the same for the 60 mg, 80 mg and 100 mg strengths. That is roughly $50,900 a year.
Is there a generic version of resmetirom?
Yes, but not in the US, the EU or India. Bangladesh has 17 generic brands. In India, CDSCO’s expert committee has recommended bioequivalence studies or Phase III trials for more than ten companies, and none has marketing permission yet.
Why is resmetirom so expensive?
It is a newly approved, patent-protected medicine. Its price reflects development and market exclusivity rather than manufacturing cost: at recent market prices, the drug substance in a 30-day pack of 80 mg tablets is worth only a few US dollars.
Does the 100 mg tablet cost more than the 80 mg tablet?
Not in the US. Rezdiffra has the same list price for the 60 mg, 80 mg and 100 mg strengths, so the monthly cost does not depend on the dose.
Will resmetirom become cheaper in India?
Prices usually fall when several generics launch, and local manufacture removes import costs. No launch date is fixed yet. Torrent Pharmaceuticals has said it will launch only after the patent expires.
